The weather gods were once again at play today at Thruxton, as mixed conditions forced the Spirit Moto Corsa riders to spend most of the two practice sessions on wet tyres.
However, it was still a productive day with both riders getting plenty of laps under their belt and dialing in their wet-weather settings.
Mason ended the day as second fastest man in GP2, while Jamie continued to learn his way on the SP2 in the wet and placed a very respectable fourth in first practice.
Free Practice One
In the early morning Free Practice One, there was no question that wet tyres were the ones to be on when the light went green.
The track steadily dried throughout the session, pushing the tyres to their limit by the end. Mason circulated for the entire duration, completing 17 laps.
Despite his tyres being rather badly torn apart, he was able to put in his best lap time on his last attempt. He finished third fastest in GP2 with a 1m25.480s.
Jamie also had a solid session, completing a dozen laps and ending up fourth quickest in class courtesy of a 1m27.245s.
Free Practice Two
Conditions looked to be improving after FP1, but a rain shower twenty minutes before second practice meant that wet tyres were required once again.
Lap times were similar to those in the opening session, but the sun was shining (all be it through the clouds) and therefore both riders decided to give it a go on slicks for the last few minutes.
Mason was able to improve his time significantly on his final lap, setting a 1m24.020s. This promoted him to second in class and fourth overall.
Jamie, on the other hand, could not beat his previous 1m26.532s lap as conditions were still a long way from optimal. He finished the session sixth place in class.
Tomorrow sees Qualifying take place at 12:25 before the Sprint Race (live on Quest) at 17:00.
A little bit of good weather would be nice, although we remain prepared for more rain over the course of the weekend!
