Mason Law and Spirit Moto Corsa again confirmed their British GP2 championship credentials with a win and a third place at Oulton Park in Cheshire over the weekend – taking the Benfleet ace to within a solitary point of the championship lead with just two rounds remaining.
Mason’s victory came in Saturday’s British GP2 Sprint race, having qualified on the third row of the grid, as the second fastest GP2 machine. The win handed him a slender series lead overnight. In Sunday’s feature race it looked almost certain that Mason and Spirit Moto Corsa would make it a weekend double at the Cheshire parkland circuit and extend that lead, only for a late mechanical gremlin to spoil the celebrations. Mason, to his credit, nursed the Spirit Moto Corsa SP2 home in third place, rounding out a more than creditable weekend for the him and the team.
“It was a good weekend, but a strange one nonetheless at Oulton Park, with some obvious highs and also some lows. We’ve closed right in on the championship lead in the GP2 class with the Spirit Moto Corsa team, although we did hold the series lead momentarily after Saturday’s Sprint Race; that was a really good race and an enjoyable win in the class. It was a tough weekend for us and although the results maybe don’t reflect that, it didn’t come as naturally as say Silverstone.
Oulton is a very different circuit that tends to suit the Supersport bikes over our GP2 machinery, as they have that little bit more ‘punch’ off the turns. It took me a while to find a rhythm and while winning Saturday’s GP2 class sprint race was good, I would like to have been closer to the Supersport guys.
We made some big changes for Sunday’s warm-up session and it became immediately apparent that we had an issue with the front of the bike. So I had to pit and while we identified the problem, it left the boys with just over an hour to get the bike turned around for the race. They did that successfully to their credit, but because we lost the warm-up session we didn’t really get to see the benefits of the changes we wanted to make.
In the race I got a good start and made my way to the front of the GP2 class and onto the back of the Supersport guys fighting for third overall. We had good pace, but I found myself a little marooned behind the Supersport bikes, before a technical issue raised its head at two-thirds distance. Yes I was able to cope with it, but it just knocked the edge off my performance, enough to mean I had to settle for a podium instead of the win. But as I say, we will take the positives from the weekend and look ahead to Donington now.”
Joey Thompson endured a challenging weekend at Oulton Park, with tenth place in Sunday’s GP2 feature race aboard the Spirit Moto Corsa machine, the pick of his results.
“Oulton Park was a bit of a tough one for me, with the bike not feeling like my own all weekend. We worked so hard to try and develop a set-up, which would suit me and the way I was riding, but unfortunately between myself and the team we were unable to do that. I had another crash in qualifying which really set us back as well, but the team did an amazing job all weekend and worked very hard to try and give me a package I could fight with. It just wasn’t to be, so it’s a case of re-grouping and going again at Donington Park next month. Thanks as always to all the Spirit team; Steve and Lewis for their hard work and also all the team’s partners and my personal sponsors, because without them, none of this would be possible.”
